About the Performance:
Róbert Alföldi is the prodigy of Hungarian theater. He directed his first opera, Gounod’s Faust, at the National Theater in Szeged in 2003. The production, performed in French, was a co-production of the Opera of Nizza and the French Institute of Budapest. The principal singers were famous French performers.
Alföldi’s new adaptation, this astonishingly contemporary version of Gounod’s piece brought a storm of debates among the critics as well as the audience. Nevertheless, at the end of the season, Alföldi was awarded with the Dömötör prize in Szeged by a public vote.
The French classical channel, Mezzo, which had never showed any Hungarian opera production before, broadcasted Alföldi’s Faust five times in prime time. This allowed opera lovers to see Alföldi’s production all over Europe, including a number of artistic directors of European opera houses who then reached out to work with the young Hungarian director.
